Anthologies of the classics are perfectly suited to handhelds. Activision Anthology is no different. There is an almost complete library of Activision games for the 2600, plus homebrews and a few prototypes, including the Venetian Blinds proto.
Most every game plays quite faithful to the original, including sounds. Games I hated on the 2600, I still hate here. Games I loved on the 2600, I still love here. Some of the homebrews are quite good as well; I've spent a fair bit of time playing the Video Euchre game.
A nice feature is that you can earn patches, that are set at the same scores as they were for the actual releases. The manuals are reproduced in full, right down to the tips from the designer, although the manual is only reproduced in text, not graphically.
The interface is quite good, in that the lobby is set up to look kind of like a rec room, with a 4 switch woody VCS and old tv. You can easily see on the high score board what patches you need, and what games have a high scores set. If you've earned a patch in a game, you get to see the actual patch in the high score section.
Now, for the drawbacks. the use of the extra buttons is slipshod, to say the least. To change difficulty and between B&W and colour, you hold down the left shoulder button and press different directions on the d-pad. the B button is completely unused, as is the right shoulder button. For games where the difficulty switches are integral, like Space Shuttle or Starmaster, the configuration is highly disruptive. There could easily have been a better layout for the buttons.
The colours seem a bit washed out, but to be fair, I only own a first-gen GBA SP with the crappy backlight, so that may have something to do with it.
There is head to head via Link Cable, but I've never tried it, so I can't fairly comment on it.
Over all, Activision Anthology for the GBA nicely reproduces the classic gaming vibe, and this is probably the best way to play all these classics, on a little screen so the dated graphics an easily maintain their charm. This game gets the most time in my GBA by far.
