Review Section (?)

Postby machine.slave » Fri Feb 20, 2004 11:40 am

I know I'm new here and all,
but I can assure you all that I'll be a regular! :D I was wondering, tho.. would there be a review forum section in the future? For old and new games, I
mean. It's easy to find reviews on new games for sure, but we're all veterans to the old games and there's no good sources for reviews on old games (that
I know of). I just think it'd be a cool idea for new collectors like myself, as I don't want to spend a bunch of dough on a crappy Atari 2600 game, and I
respect all of your opinions when it comes to the good oldies. :D

Anywho, I'd be more than happy to actively participate! Just a thought!

I think that reviews are pretty pointless on their own. They're usually more relevant when grouped in bunches of 5 or so.
I'd much prefer a system where you could just start a poll thread where you name the game and ask if people whether they think it's good or bad. Majority
rules and the rest is history.

I think that most people would just start up their own website, write their own reviews if they felt like it, and then
put their URL in their signature.

Not always having a review, but http://www.mobygames.com can sometimes be a good place to get a general idea of a game, as well as screen
shots.

Just a suggestion.

Well, I would have to agree... I mean reviews are always taken with a box of salt-licks. I think what I meant was, more a section where people can
suggest a game that they really like (and possibly why they like it), and people could respond with whether they like it as well or if they hate it, and then
of course the majority would rule at that point. Some sort of system, anyhow.

I mean I've collected a bunch of systems and would love to finally
start collecting cartridges, but my luck hasn't been that great (castlevania for the N64 -- what the hell is that!?), and I'm sure I'm not the only one
that's purchased a flaming bag of poo in a cartridge before.

But the poll idea sounds pretty good, as you'd get a variety of viewpoints for
sure.

Something to think about, anyway

Good idea, but if it ever happens, there should be strict rules on it's format.
If someone posted up a game for review, 1. the game name and system
should be in the topic subject, like "Name This Game (Atari 2600)", and 2. the poll included should let other forum members rate the aforementioned game by a
scale of 1 to 10. Members who vote should follow up their vote with a post, i.e. "I gave this game a 10, and here's why".
Anybody have other ideas how
this could work?

Yeah, I'm liking the multi-reader review thing.. that way it's totally un-biased.

i love writing complex reviews, and used to do so for www.eightbitonline.com

now i don't have the time to maintain
a site and would welcome the opportunity to contribute reviews to a site i already enjoyed.

Reviews, to me don't really tell me anything critical. I never read reviews of new games until I've
beaten them. I like more or less reading people's opinions of games rather then whether or not I should have the game.

However, I think reviews here,
done on older games, would be nice (or the poll thing suggested). A lot of reviews I find for old games are from someone who's only emulated the game. You
usually can't give a decent review of a game unless you've actually played it in original format.

The multi-review seems a nice direction.
