cell phone plans?

Postby theyangman » Sat Aug 19, 2017 10:56 am

So I'm a heavy data user. I burn through about 12-15 gigs personally a month, and I am on a share everything plan through Rogers. (I have my mom & gf on my plan. My mom hardly uses anything, while my gf uses about 2 - 4 gigs per month)

I was on an older 16 gig plan and we found that we were going over a lot.

NORMALLY, the plan works out like this:

Me: 155
Mom: 55
GF: 30
----------
240 a month.

This doesn't account for any top-ups I have to do almost every month for a few extra gigs, costing an extra 25 bucks or so.

I just changed my plan to a 20 gig share everything for 15 bucks more a month, so I am now at 255 a month for all three lines & 20 gigs. It obviously includes things like voicemail, canada wide calling, call waiting and that other crap.

So what I am asking is if anyone has any better plans straight up though?

Now, I do not want to go down the route of doing the Saskatchewan plan/port trick. I know that is an option via koodo/Telus, but I'd like to avoid any sketchyness like that.

I have nothing to offer...just a "Holy fucking shit you USE too much AND you PAY too much". If my cell bill was over $120 a month for both myself and my wife, someone would be getting a foot in the ass. 2gb for each of us is plenty, I have internet at home...

Tony - you just have to tone back the midget porn videos a bit and you'll use far less bandwidth......

I want to suggest Freedom Mobile, but if you say you are in Saskatchewan, ummm maybe try a different company. I will say most of Freedom's plans include Unlimited Data, but the catch is that they may give you 3-5gb of 'full speed' per month, but as soon as you use that you are dropped to half speed until the end of your billing period.

As it stands, the high end plan that I think you would be happy with is $40/month, and shell out an extra $10/month to get the extra full speed data.

I personally have 3G download speeds of about 300-400kb/s and drops to about 150kb/s when I exceed the 5gb in my plan.

By the way im on an older 'student plan' that may or may not be available any more which is why I have the 5gb limit instead of the more common 3gb.

I'm very close to getting a new share everything plan with my wife with Telus, just waiting to see what the new Note 8 is going to be like and if I should go with that over the S8+.

$255 seems pretty decent to me, combined I think we were looking at about $200 all in for the two of us with 12GB combined data, but with the unlimited Talk/Text across Canada and the U.S (mum lives down there and this is a must for me).

Telus has canada wide, and for like 10 bucks more you can add us wide as well I believe.

The note 8 is 1000% my next phone, I have had every Note since the first one, and it really looks like it is going to be a slick, slick phone. I've played with the S8+ and it is phenomenal. I can't imagine the Note 8 would be anything less.

I currently have the Pixel XL, and I hate it. I got this after I had to return my Note 7 last fall. I just prefer the Samsung layout much more than the native Android. Mainly the back and menu keys are reversed and to this day I still hit the wrong side constantly. Can't unwire 6+ years of button presses.

You know you can customize that to whatever you want in essentially every ROM that's been released right?Image

Samsung makes great hardware but terrible software. Every note I've had I lasted about a few days with their bloated garbage OS. Every single phone they say "this one's different we finally made good software" yet still even with the s8 the OS is the big downfall.

Does this require the phone to be rooted though?

I took a look on XDA for this. Seems like it is built into Nougat, but you got to unlock it somehow with some work.

Not worth it at this point as the Note 8 is right around the corner. I'll wait. This phone isn't going to be my problem any longer in a month.

To each their own I suppose. I'm nerd. Everything gets taken apart, everything gets modded, hacked, customized. Phones no different. It's not for everyone though. Seems crazy to me spend $1k on new phone for software when you have newest most customizable developer phone on market today. Take longer to go to store than learn what your phone can do in my eyes. I'm lazy too but now it's all dummy proof with premade toolkits, no ADB commands necessary. Hardware changes are become so incremental now that even those are hard to justify for me. if you have phone up to maybe a few years old, just like PC now, all the same with 1 or 2 more gigawazoos.

My only concern is it shares the same curved screen design as the S8+, which I'm kind of not a fan of...to worried about my phone getting damaged. Hopefully there are some good cases out there!
Was also kind of hoping the Galaxy S8 Active would get released in Canada, that would probably be more ideal for me.
