Is there a way to program a button to use as a safe shutdown? Or would this require keyboard access? I am trying to figure out how to create a better shutdown procedure than using the keyboard and exiting the emulation.

With MAME, yes - you should - just route the power button wires from the main board to a button at the top/back of the cab.

If there is a pi inside you could try something like https://www.element14.com/community/doc ... berry-pi-b:

You wire a button to a couple of the gpio pins and run a script at startup

I wired up some controls directly to the pins for a buddy and it seems to be working great so far. I have the pi and a control panel to try one for me now

With luck it should be wired and configured and ready to go by next Christmas!

Just curious if the game ROM's you can drop on your pie have arcade quality. Mainly thinking of late 80's / early 90's games like the Simpsons, TMNT, action games, etc. Haven't got into the Pi projects, but keep thinking about it. Are the the ROMS mainly rips of NES, Sega, etc. console versions or are there arcade quality versions you can obtain?

Yes - a Pi-cade is essentially just MAME - same ROMs you put on your PC MAME, and the same ROMs that were ripped from the actual games too.

Excellent. I was worried they were just versions you would get off a console rather than an arcade. There's often a big difference in game quality on various levels.

Just ordered a few Pi3 and a Zero to tinker with... until I get some real arcade cabs going.

I see that many use large micro SD cards for the main image, but wonder if using a USB to store my ROMs is better than one big micro SD.

Has anyone used the VGA 666 output board? Not sure it will work on my 3, but looks neat. I wonder if it would have less lag than HDMI to VGA. Any thoughts? I have a Sony CRT TV, and was thinking to convert to Component from VGA rather than HDMI... or is it LCD screens that cause all the lag? I wish they made 27" CRT computer monitors so I would be able to go straight VGA.

It looks pretty sweet. If I had a Jamma cab, I would grab for sure. As it stands I have a blank slate. Was considering the Gerts VGA666 output for Pi, which is similar circuit to the Pi2Jamma AFAIK. It's only $10. I reckon any CRT will be better for lag than an LCD. Then I can just worry about lag in the control inputs

By the time I do all that, I will have a Jamma cab and coulda just got the Pi2Jamma...

I've been uber slow in getting my Pi project done.
It's sad really, as it truly has been pretty easy to get set up and running.
Part of my delay is these MAJOR DELAYS in goodies from China.
It was mentioned in another thread, but F**K I've been waiting for December for some parts. INSANE !

Now I'm all sweet on these empty NES cart + Pi Zero builds ! Soooo cool !
You can pick up 5 of the empty NES carts off Ali Express for under $20 US.
But again it is these MAJOR shipping delays.

Before I got my Pi installed into the bartop I had wanted to configure it with various USB controllers. I had been expected NES, SNES, and GENESIS versions....but they never did show up.

So what is this, kind of same as above, basically an adapter for Pi to Jamma?

I see people talking about this, but at $140 USD for a Jamma adapter, I'd still have to get the Pi, and figure out how the hell to implement a front end and have game ROMs load on it.

I'm going to wait until:
a) The Chinese come out with a $30 version of it that fits the Pi
b) Others have made really nice MAME images that I can write to the SD card

In other words, I'm going to wait until other people do the hard work

Many Many premade Pi Images available on the below site. Some really nice stuff that looks like hyperspin is coming out now.
