Aug.20, Added links to my webpage showing a few pics

The "Mission of Battle Creek" was a complete success. I went to Battle Creek MI, USA on Thursday to pick it up. The round trip took about 9 hours in the rented cargo van including rest stops & supper (and gas costs way too dam much but only about 75 cents/litre down there). The seller Mike and his wife "Sarnia" (named after our city) were very nice. No wrong turns anywhere along the way. At the border, few questions asked, didn't have to pay anything, and of we went. Got home about midnight.

The game is the cleanest I have ever seen. Even the bottom is spotless. Inside is pristeen. There is no damage anywhere, not even any nicks in the T-molding. There's a couple of very small scuffs on the sideart on one side but it's really nothing. The other side is perfect. The CPO and bezel and marquee are perfect. The monitor may need a cap kit, but looks great anyway. All the thing needs is a once-over with some "simple-green" cleaner to remove some smoke film buildup. The machine was won by the original owner in a Mountain Dew contest in 1982. He had the game in the house ever since. Everything works, all the keys are there, the original sales receipt and manual are there. The coin mechs are shiny like new. There is even a note from the factory saying how it was factory-set to free play and how to start a game.

I will put together a webpage for it pretty soon so you can take a look at it. Overall, I'm very happy with the transaction. Everything went great and I got a great game too. Cost was $500 but I feel like I stole it.

That's really neat. Pengo is a highly underrated game, and one in that condition with a cool history is worth having. Nice snag I'd have to say, and $500 is nothing relatively speaking.

I'm sorry to say that I'm a US customs agent, I will have to "confiscate" that arcade... Laughing

Good score, can't wait to see the web-writeup.

Congrats! Which pengo is it? Popcorn, or the other one?

Does this mean I can ship you 2 pengo boards to see if my problem is with the board, or the wiring Smile

I'm re-building a pengo this fall. I have the boardset, JAMMA adapter, cabinet with original graphics, new marquee, new repro CPO...

All I need is to fix up the control panel...unless anyone knows where I can get a replacement in good shape...?

A very good question. When I was considering getting a Pengo, I was remembering the Popcorn music from back when I played this game at our local arcade. I had read somewhere that there was an earlier version that had different music. I wanted the Popcorn version. The machine that I just bought is NOT the Popcorn version Crying or Very sad

As for your questionable boards, you could send them and I could plug them in just to see if they work or not. I also have a spare board but I know for sure that it doesn't work because there's a couple of broken chips (maybe it was dropped or carelessly stacked). My plan now is to repair it and keep it as a spare in case something happens. I've heard of some Pengos having a custom Z80 with built-in decryption for the encrypted version of the eproms so I have to try to determine which version my spare board and machine has before I go messing with eproms.

However, the J-man http://www.jrok.com/hardware/pengo_epack/pengo_epack.html sells this simple plug-in module that will not only add hi-score saving, but also allows the machine to play both versions, the original, and the final Popcorn version. I emailed the guy last evening about this but so far no answer. I've emailed the guy several times in the past and he has never responded so I don't know what his deal is. I've looked for this module elsewhere since I know his stuff is sold by other arcade parts sellers (i.e. Mike's Arcade sells his Galaga customs replacements) but I haven't found it yet.

I know that I could likely just plug in new eproms to get the Popcorn version but in this case I was hoping to not have to modify very much, if anything, since the game is in perfect factory-original condition.

I'm confused a little about something though. My game has a free play mode but the manual says nothing in the options table about freeplay settings. The present switch positions do not match anything in the book either. Maybe it is a secret code that enables free play. I am going to write down the present switch settings before I change them. I just want to try out the coin mechs. I think this game has maybe never seen a coin drop! Of course the mechs are for US quarters and look like brand new.

The monitor was built in Kitchener Ontario at Electrohome June 21, 1982. The monitor looks like brand new. I've never seen a yoke coil or a chassis so new and clean looking. There's no dust or dirt or spiderwebs or anything at all.

That is cool that you know the history of the game. Kind of interesting that it was won in a Mountain Dew contest. I've always wondered if someone wins those contests!

I think that it'll be quite a while before I get anywhere close to you. I now have 15 machines (sadly no pins yet!). What are you up to now, 54?

There is an BIG issue with that machine. How are you going to put all your usual TLC into a machine that is already perfect???

You make a good point. Guess I'll have to leave it outside by the shed this winter.
