Well she plays quietly =) If I connect the speaker I get an insanely loud assault of god knows what. I have no idea where to start with that!

Start by adding a resistor to the speaker wire to dampen it. That way you'll see if it's just outputting too much to the speakers, or if the sound is actually bad.

Wow you're smart. So one resistor on one of the wires? One on each? What value would you suggest? Thanks!

If it's a 4ohm speaker, add a 4ohm resistor to one wire. If it's an 8ohm speaker, add an 8ohm resistor. This will reduce the power by 1/2.
