HP PC question (boot device issue)

Postby mike boss » Fri Oct 04, 2019 10:11 pm

I'm kind stumped here and thought I would see if perhaps someone more PC inclined could assist me.
The in-laws PC is seemingly pooched and it's my job to fix it.

Prior when the booted it up they got some kind of service menu, that allowed to back up date, attempt a restore, etc.
NOW HOWEVER I do not get that menu! I get a menu that tells me BOOT DEVICE NOT FOUND.
I pressed F2, and the HDD and memory both pass the test (for whatever it's worth).

So if the HDD and MEMORY pass could the HDD still be messed up ?? I found a video online that said to disable legacy boot. I did that, however no resolve. I'm just stumped....mostly stumped as to weather or not the HDD could be pooched yet pass this test.

Or do I quit now, simply swap out the drive with a new drive and be done ?

It's likely your drive may be fine but the boot partition is corrupt. May be no way back from it either. This very thing happened during the past year on my desktop. I kept running desperately low on drive space on drive 'c' till things went south. Ultimately I bought a new Intel 500G SSD Sata drive and a 5 dollar Windows 10 serial from some Chinese Ebay seller. Overall it was fixed for under a 100 dollars and is speedy as shit and backed up what ever needed to be recovered from the old one.

Thank you, I appreciate the info.
I think I'll do the same and just scrap the HDD and replace it.
I'll attempt to dock it and move over whatever data I can.

I should have given you a bit more information on the Windows 10 install with a purchased licence key from Ebay. Go to the following link to download your choice of install direct from Microsoft. I went the USB method and changed my BIOS to boot direct from USB media to install with the new SATA drive. Couldn't be easier.
