My Projects

Postby ChanceKJ » Sat Mar 05, 2016 3:56 am

Contained in this thread will be my ever growing list of projects, cabinets, restores, and modifications. I figured it would be cool to have a combined, visual list of everything i’ve done in the hobby to date. Clicking on any of the images will take you to my complete Flickr gallery of the game. A lot of the links above each picture are related threads on the BYOAC, KLOV, and videos of the game from my YouTube channel. Please enjoy, and let me know if you have any questions. :)

-FLYNN'S Arcade-
Started: Oct 2013
Completed: Nov 2014
My first build. A four player MAME/Console cabinet. This project started because I saw an ad on
my Facebook feed for an Arcade X Tank stick cabinet. After sharing it on my wall a friend of an Ex
offered to let me use his shop to build it (I didn't have a garage at the time. I went back and forth
on if I should get into the hobby, always wanting a Simpsons cab since I was little. The day I decided
I had posted a picture of a joystick on my Fb wall, and another friend remarked that I'd never get it
finished. I sure showed him. Now one of the most copied, viewed, and talked about cabinets on the BYOAC.
Production of this cabinet has put me in the hobby, kickstarted The Canadian Arcade, and also in directly
responsible for my involvement as a Co-Star on Animal Planet's "Scaled". ...Facebook ads, huh?

-Nintendo Donkey Kong: Ultimate-
Acquired: Nov 2014
Completed: Dec 2015
Converting and updating a Classic Nintendo cab to have all six versions of Donkey Kong in one arcade.
When I fist started in this hobby I really wanted to get my hands on a Donkey Kong cabinet. Thinking
that I'd never have the space for a full Nintendo row, I decided to convert this absolutely destroyed
Japanese blue DK into a Multi-Kong. And since I did want the other games on the Arcade SD to go to
waste I also made a second control panel (based on the VS panel) that I can drop in and swap the SD
cards to play the other games too!

-Nintendo 5-Slot Donkey Kong Restore-
Acquired: May 29th, 2018
Completed: Dec 18th, 2018
KLOV Pickup Thread
Picked this up on a small Alberta farm after a friend spotted it on a Kijiji ad.
This is an early Pre-DK Nintendo cabinet which is quite sought after by Nintendo
collectors. Most of these are either Radarscope or factory conversions to Donkey
Kong done after the well documented flop of Radarscope in North America. This
has been given a full DK restoration with a DK board stack and the addition of DK Remix.

KLOV Control Panel Restoration Thread
Picked this up in a small Alberta town outside of Edmonton and it had been converted to a NeoGeo
MVS 1-Slot. I've since collected all the parts to convert it back, Removed the NeoGeo Parts and restored the
game back to it's original glory.

-Williams Joust Upright/MVS Restore to MultiWMS-
Acquired: May 22, 2017
Completed: April 27th, 2020
KLOV Pickup Thread
Converted by the same people that did my Moon Patrol, Found it in Calgary in a friends collection and had to have it
as i feel its a matching pair with my Moon Patrol. Tag inside states it was converted by "Pacific Vending, Nov 3, 1992".
It has been restored and converted into a Multi-WMS with a JROK. Detailed step by step videos of the control panel
restoration can be seen on the Canadian Arcade Instagram, in the Highlights section.

LIVE: Assembly Video
Based on an original Dynamo HS-1 Generic cabinet, just like the original dedicated GnG's were. This
game was given a modern twist with white sides, matte side art, and updated buttons. This cabinet
uses a converted SF2:CE PCB to play all three ROM sets of GnG with a switch box for selection.
Cabinet is a Dynamo HS-1

-Taito Rally Bike Dynamo HS-2 Restore-
Acquired: Jan 8th, 2018
Completed: July 15th, 2018
A Taito top down racing game. Surprisingly as a motorsports fan I didn't
have too many motorsports games in my collection. I acquired this kit
from another local collector, and decided that because the game was
so much fun that i should build a dedicated cabinet for it. Cab is a
Dynamo HS-2

-Capcom Street Fighter II: CE-
Acquired: June 30th. 2019
Completed: March 11th, 2020
I've never been much of a Street Fighter fan, however I have a bunch of friends who are and I figured
I might as well add more to my collection for them too. I nabbed this generic Dynamo HS-9 cabinet for
cheap from a friend and converted it to Street Fighter II: CE with a Rainbow ROMS set. It's now on location
at a buddies VR Place here in Calgary.

-Williams Joust Cocktail Restore-
Acquired: Nov 2015
Completed: Dec 21st, 2018
Restore Video: Part 1
Another machine shop pickup from a collector living just North of Red Deer, Alberta.
Took me 3 years to get off my ass and restore the control panels. Should have never
just made it playable and went strait to work on them.

Image

-Playmatic Chance-
Acquired: January 26, 2016
Pickup Video!
A 1978, Playmatic built in Spain. My first Pinball machine. This game needs a lot of love. Since getting my hands
on it, I've also found a second playfield, board set, and some other metal parts. I've also replaced all of the connectors
and headers in the head with new Molex KK series as they were a poor design and rare European style. A buddy of mine
is also working on a reproduction version of the relay PCB's to update them.

Image

-Gottlieb El Dorado-
Acquired: April 8, 2018
Completed:
A 1975, Gottlieb electro mechanical pinball machine. Given to me by
a veteran operator and old family friend and my second pin. The playfield has been stripped
down and sent off to Germany for reproduction and in the mean time I'm going to be doing
a full factory fresh restore on the cabinet including new paint, decals, and anything worn.
This will be a long haul project, but a very important one to me.

Image

-Centuri/Konami Track & Field Restore-
Acquired: April 22nd, 2020
Completed:
Restore Video Part 1: Teardown
Picked this one up from a local collector (same guy I picked up my first Red Tent from a number of years before. Got it
for a price I couldn't pass up. It has a bootleg Tetris PCB inside, and needs a little work. All in all it's pretty stable and
shouldn't take much to bring back to life.

Image

-Bally/Midway Tron Restore-
Acquired: May 3rd. 2019
Completed:
Pickup Video
Can't pass up a free Tron cabinet! Scored this from a buddy who didn't want it any longer. It needs WORK. This will be
a long play of a restoration as I take the time to slowly collect the parts that are missing, then rip it all down and start
from scratch. I'd like to do the translight video mod, glowing t-moulding, and maybe add a separate switch matrix with
an MP3 trigger board to launch extra sounds and such from the movie as you open the coin door, etc.

Image

-Midway Space Invaders-
Date Acquired: August 28th, 2020
Josh and I picked this up in Calgary with a bunch of Atari cabs. We're hoping one day to restore this, but I wouldn't hold
your breath as it's probably on the lowest of priorities. As we find the parts we'll slowly put it back together.

-Konami Simpsons-
Date Acquired: April 2nd, 2018
At long last, the cabinet that started it all for me. One of my very first
interactions with arcade games as a kid, now in my collection. And it's
a fine example of the game to boot! Since i started in this hobby in 2013
I have missed out on or passed up on 7 of these for various reasons.
But now I have one of my own! As of March 2020 this game is now on location
at a buddies VR place in Calgary so more people an enjoy it.

Image

-SNK NeoGeo MVS-4-25-
Date Acquired: April 2nd, 2018
Another game from my youth. My home town of High River, Alberta used to
have a bowling alley. And in it was a multi-Slot Neo Geo MVS cab. That
cabinet exposed me to the Metal Slug series, and rest assured this cabinet
will always have at least one Metal Slug cart at any given time. I've replaced
the buttons with Ultimarc Gold Leafs, and Ultimarc J-Stick joysticks.

Image

-Nintendo Mario Bros.-
Date Acquired: July 2015
KLOV Project Thread
Found in a Regina garage, This Home Use Only cab will be brought back to its former glory. Ideally
what I'd like to do with it is transplant as much of the Mario Bros parts in it to a Widebody restoration
(if I can find a donor cab), and make this into a dedicated Duck Hunt/Hogans Alley/Gumshoe cab.

Image

-Williams Make Trax Cabaret-
Date Acquired: April 2nd, 2018
Not a game I was ever hugely familiar with, However I'm growing a decent
collection of Williams cabinets, and I had yet to own a Williams cabaret.
Now i own a factory fresh cabaret, aquired with only 250 plays on the
coin counter. Plus its my second cabaret, so it will look nice next to battlezone.

Image

-Exidy Bandido-
Date Acquired: July 15th, 2017
The North American release of Nintendo's Sheriff but from Exidy.
Easily one of my favourite games. We found it working at an old
Op in Central Alberta. Just needed a cleaning and a couple bulbs.

Image

-Midway Gun FIght-
Date Acquired: July 6th, 2020
Played this game for the first time at Ginkfest 7 in 2019 and Loved it.
When this came up from a collector in B.C. I had to jump on it.
When I got my hands on it the monitor had some issues, but those
will be addressed and it will go in the lineup proper.

Image

-Atari System 1 - Marble Madness-
Date Acquired: August 28th, 2020
Picked this up from a local Calgary collector as a Roadblasters.
I plan on converting it back to a Marble Madness over the next bit.

Image

-Atari Warlords Cocktail-
Date Acquired: August 28th, 2020
Picked this up the same day as the Atari system 1 cabinet. Game
is in AMAZING condition and complete. When found it needed new
CPO's a replacement for one of the start buttons, powder coating
for the leg and bezel assembly, and a RAM error on the board.

Image

-Atari Asteroids Deluxe Cocktail-
Date Acquired: August 30th, 2020
One of the nicest Atari cocktails I've ever seen. Also picked this
up from the same collector tat had the Warlords cocktail and
the System 1 cabinet. Not much is going to be done but clean
the cabinet and give the monitor a recap.

Image

-Atari Asteroids Cocktail-
Date Acquired: August 30th, 2020
Picked this up as a parts cab. It's missing its PCB, but the monitor
is solid, and if anything I can use to to help upkeep the rest of my
Atari cocktails and cabarets.

Image

-Atari Battlezone Cabaret-
Date Acquired: August 6th, 2017
My first cabaret and second vector game. Picked this up for a song
on a raid to an Op. The sticks have been rebuilt, and the monitor
needed a rebuild. I also added some new colour gels for the CRT
and a High Score Save kit. It needs a new tube sooner or later as
it has some decent burn on it.

Found in a Saskatchewan machine shop. This rare Italian cabinet will be my dedicated Shmup cab.
Not much is known about this game. If you have a Marquee i'd love to talk to you!

-Kaneko Great 1000 Mile Rally-
Date Acquired: April 20. 2017
Original Pickup Video
Lets Play Video
Originally belonging to my co-host on The Canadian Arcade (which he picked
up in early 2016). I've since acquired this game from him and cleaned it up.

Image

-SEGA Super Monaco GP-
Date Acquired: Oct 28. 2018
Original Pickup Video
One of my all time Must-have games. As a HUGE McLaren fan, and with Senna
being my childhood hero, I've been looking to add this game to my collection
for some time. Its missing the Lens for the bezel, but other then that that art
is near flawless compared to some others I've seen over the years. This game is
now obligation at a buddies local VR place in Calgary.

Image

-Nintendo Sheriff Cocktail-
Acquired: April 1, 2017
Pickup Video
A massive grail of mine. Found via a craigslist add in New Mexico and offered by a subscriber to the YouTube channel.
This game will be getting the FULL restoration treatment.

Image

-Nintendo Donkey Kong Cocktail-
Acquired: January 11, 2020
How could I pass up an almost mint DK cocktail? Came in from another collector in B.C. took a couple months to make
the deal happen, (an it almost didn't). Honestly, I was only looking for a pair of control panels and it just showed up in
my inbox. lol. I restored the CRT, added a loonie mech, some LED lighting for the mech, and put it on location at our
local pinball bar here in Calgary.

Image

-Nintendo Helifire-
Date Acquired: April 1, 2017
Pickup Video
Another pre Donkey Kong piece of Nintendo History. This game will be restored along side my Sheriff.

Image

-Nintendo Red Tent #1-
Date Acquired: March 07, 2015
BYOAC Pickup Thread
Bought from a collector in High River, Alberta. Currently has a few Vs PCB's. The main one runs a pair of
2600 Multi-Vs Lite boards with: Tennis, Balloon Fight, Wrecking Crew, Super Mario Bros, Mighty Bomb Jack,
Battle City, Mach Rider, Vs. Slalom, Ice Climber, ExciteBike, Vs. Pinball, Clu Clu Land, and Skate Kid. I also
have a secondary PCB that has Dr Mario, and another copy of SMB. Im trying to find a couple more Vs games
for this as well.

-Nintendo Red Tent #2-
Date Acquired: September 12, 2015
BYOAC Pickup Thread
Acting as a parts cab/slow restoration project.

Image

-Sega/Gremlin Space Firebird-
Date Acquired: November 20, 2016
Pickup Video!
CGCC Pickup Thread
A Sega Gremlin Space Firebird Cocktail Cabinet, found in a barn outside of Sylvan Lake, Ab. Needs a little love
cosmeticaly, but the game boots up and plays. The artwork is crazy responsive to black lights.

Image

-StarCastle Bootleg Cocktail-
Date Acquired: January 15, 2015
BYOAC Pickup Thread
Found in a Red Deer, Alberta machine shop. This was the first real arcade cabinet i acquired.

Image

-Namco Jamma Conversion-
Started: Nov 2015
Completed: Dec 2016
BYOAC Project Thread
An old Namco Soul Edge II I’ve converted to be a generic JAMMA cabinet for game testing and multi-board play.
Currently sitting up in my dinning room. Watching people new to my place freak out when they see this, then freak out
again when they go down and see me collection: Priceless. Lately this game has been given a Neo Geo 1-Slot PCB
and it has made its way on location at a local VR place.

Image

-Williams Hit The Ice-
Date Acquired: March 19th, 2018
I picked this game up from another local collector in order to put it on location.
It's by no means going to be a complete spec restoration, as time and funding
only really permits it to look the part and be playable. But I think I did a good job.

Image

-Dynamo HS-5 Street Fighter Alpha 2-
Acquired: Feb 14th, 2019
Picked this up from a piano teacher a few minutes away from my place. He was big into
pinball and got this as part of a package deal so knew about me from the community. He
had broken the neck on the CRT moving it and asked me to come and see hat I could do to
repair it. When I got to his place I made an offer on it and he accepted. I replaced the CRT,
added a Street Fighter art package, cleaned up the control panel, and now its on location
at a local Pinball bar in town.

Image

-Dynamo HS-1 NeoGeo MVS 1-Slot-
Acquired: March 8th, 2020
I've been wanting to take this HS1 cabinet off my buddy's hands for a couple
years now. Wanting to turn it into a dedicated Bust-A-Move cabinet for my home
collection. It didn't need much work to get it up and running, and currently has
a temporary home on location at our city's local pinball bar.

Image

-Midway NFL Blitz/NBA Showtime-
Date Acquired: Sept 25th, 2018
I picked this game up from another local collector in order to put it on location.
It's by no means going to be a complete spec restoration, as time and funding
only really permits it to look the part and be playable. I did add the SSD hard drive
modification and a new power supply though.

Image

-Capcom CPS2 Marvel Superheroes (DigDug cab)-
Acquired: Sept 26th, 2018
Picked this up from a local collector in the pinball community, Apparently it was his first
arcade game in his collection. I cleaned it up, made a new bezel for it, some fresh smoked
plexi, cleaned the control panel, and replaced the battery on the PCB. Now it lives on location
at a buddies VR place here in Calgary.

Image

-Midway NBA Jam-
Date Acquired: April 13th, 2018
We found this game in a sneaker shop downtown Calgary. The previous owners
told us that they had turned it off because it had "caught fire" one day and just
started smoking. When i pulled it into the garage i realized that it was just the
transformer on the marquee light. I cleaned this up, added some side art and
put it on location.

Image

-Rainbow Crane-
Date Acquired: April 2nd, 2018
We picked this crane up as a fun addition to the arcade for many of our
friends and their kids. We figure what better way to remember how much
fun the arcade was then too add something where you could take away a
reminder. I plan to put this game on tokens, rather then freeplay to avoid
any of my friends or their kids cleaning house on us. :D

Image

-Super PlayChoice-
Started: March 2014
Completed: May 2014
BYOAC Project Thread
This SNES Advantage controller contains an Intel NUC desktop PC and all Nintendo games released pre-N64.

A cocktail conversion i did for a buddy of mine using a Canadian made Midway clone.

Abandoned Projects, Ideas, and Sold/Traded Games
These are projects i’ve either abandoned, traded off, or never made it out of the planning stages.

-Home Built Neo-Joust Upright-
Started: Nov 17th, 2017
Traded: Sept, 2018
KLOV Build Thread
CGCC Build Thread
I was building this custom Joust cabinet from scratch to make into a NeoGeo MVS 1-Slot with all the
extra NeoGeo parts i had laying around after deconverting my Moon Patrol. However I ended up getting
my hands on my NeoGeo 4-slot, so this project sat collecting dust. I found another local collector that I
traded it to for Multi-WMS parts and he and I are both making Multi-WMS cabs out of them.
Image

-Nintendo Super System-
Acquired: March 19th, 2018
Traded: May 30th, 2019
A game i bought to put on location but wanted to convert back once it ran its course.
I'm not really big into Nintendo cabinets post Vs. era, but i am big into the Super
Nintendo console. Traded for a MVS 4-slot I then traded for my Dynamo HS-1 NeoGeo 1-Slot.
Image

-SEGA Rally-
Acquired: June 9th, 2018
Sold: July, 2019
Obviously this game is too big for my basement, and too heavy to take down the stairs
so it lived parked in my garage. It worked fully, just had a fair bit of cosmetic wear and tear.
I've since sold this to some guys that own a welding shop outside of Edmonton.
Image

-Atari Centipede-
Acquired: December 2nd, 2016
Sold: March 3rd, 2017
Both this from a teacher in a small town just west of Calgary. He had been using it in his classroom
as part of a program he was teaching on electronics. Honestly, I had very little love for this game
and sold it in March soon after to fund the purchase of my Nintendo Sheriff. It now resides at Short
Circuit Arcade in Edmonton.
Image

-Simplistic Pac-Man Bartop-
The idea here was to create a high quality bartop from hardwood, leather, glass, and neon.
Image

-Super PlayChoice 2-
Was to be a cocktail replacement for my SuperPlaychoice. Dual LCD with an Intel NUC. USB ports for SNES controllers.
Image

-FLYNN’s Portable-
A portable version of my MAME cab that i could take with me and share with others.

Current PCB List
Here is a list of all of my extra PCB's not currently in a cab. I'll do my best to keep this list updated as I trade/buy/sell.
If you see something you like, shoot me an offer, I may want to let it go for cash or trade.

Aero Fighters
Aero Fighters (bootleg)
Ameri Darts
Arch Rivals
Astro Fighter
Capcom Bowling
Champ Wrestler
Egg Venture
Golden-T 98
High impact football
Lightning Fighters

Things i'm looking for!
This is a list of games, parts, and stuff i'm looking for just in case you have it laying around and want to make a deal. :)

-Taito Ice Cold Beer
-Bally Midway Tapper
-Anything Sheriff related.
-WG 19" D7700 chassis
-Actual flyers for any of my games
-Marble Madness
-Omega Race
-Tailgunner
-Digdug
-Space Invaders
-Juno First
-Zoo keeper
-Timber
-Red baron
-Darius
-Night Driver
-Pole position
-Space Encounters
-Nibbler

Current State of my Home Arcade
In the fall of 2016 we moved into a new place that allows me to have a full dedicated basement arcade/shop/studio for my hobby and projects. I'm running about 400w of black light bulbs, some moving lights, a home theatre projector with screen, a 5.1 sound system, and dedicated circuits to groups of my games. We figure at max i could fit about 45 down here so i have a lot of space to grow. The studio space is where we shoot some episodes of The Canadian Arcade, and some light photography work. I've since added a crane, candy machine, and an air hockey table. A bunch of the art on the walls is from our friend Dirty Donny.

Jesus I saw the Donkey Kong on Arcade Controls....

that thing is CHEEEEEEEEEEERRY. The small details make it so stupidly sexy, the nintendo plate on the back, the monitor adjustment paper, and the wiring is so perfect (and cool! Where did you get a purple jamma harness!??)

Well done my friend. Well done....
I want more games...

:) thanks guys.

Making/using/troubleshooting a harnes made of two colours isn't hard really if you think about it. Jamma connectors are a standard, so if something using working (which it would be anyways if you take your time to get it right) you can simply just look at the order of wires on the edge connector. Plus, the way I made it, each section is custom length to where it is in the cab.

I ended making one years ago with an edge connector, some spare green wire (which was all I had available at the time), and some heat shrink.
So - all connections were green.....unintentionally.
I just labelled the end of each wire near the microsswitches, RGBGS, speaker and power with small labels printed with a label maker so I could connect them easily.
